What to expect when you come in. . .
Each service is outlined below to give you a bit more information about what to expect. In general, however, each session may have a combination of art therapy and talk therapy depending on the client's needs/wishes.
Initial Session/ Assessment:
This is a chance for us to meet, discuss the help you're looking for, explore goals, and determine what the next step will be. I will describe the services I provide, and I will answer any questions you may have. I will also ask questions about the current issue(s) that bring you to therapy and any relevant history, similar to a doctor's visit.
What should you expect in an Art Therapy session?
We will likely explore different art materials, create one or more pieces of art (through painting, drawing, collage, or sculpture), and then talk about the artwork and the art-making process. Sometimes art making will be spontaneous, other times, I might provide instructions or suggestions geared toward your therapeutic goals. You may take all your art work home after your final session. No previous experience with art is necessary.
I work one-on-one with you/your child using Art Therapy and/or talk therapy to explore problems, develop a plan, identify strengths, and work towards solutions and the development of healthy coping skills. Most individual sessions are an hour long, but shorter or longer sessions may be offered, as needed.
These sessions focus on relationships among family members, as they relate the individual client's needs/treatment. I do not offer family therapy as the sole focus of treatment, but offer it as a supplement to individual sessions as needed. Not all family members need to be present in family sessions, but all family members who attend will have the opportunity to contribute. The therapist will work with the family to identify problems and goals for therapy.
Small Group Sessions:
These sessions are offered to target specific problems such as building self-esteem, improving social skills, dealing with conflict and/or anger, coping with grief or loss, or developing healthy boundaries. Groups work together to identify group “rules,” as well as goals for therapy. Art Therapy is usually incorporated in to these sessions.
