Counseling
I take a flexible approach to treatment based on each client's individual needs and goals. In addition to Art Therapy, I am also experienced in traditional counseling methods. I utilize a number of therapeutic perspectives, which I tailor to you. Here is a bit more about some of the approaches I use most often and what I find helpful about each of them. . .
Adlerian Therapy
-
Encourages development of empathy
-
Emphasizes our own creative ability to solve problems
-
Promotes development of sense of belonging within communities around us (i.e. family, work, city)
-
Looks at the life "tasks" of friendship, work, and love to improve all aspects of the individual's functioning
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
-
Much evidence supports using this approach to help with anxiety and depression.
-
Looks at the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behavior.
-
Emphasizes how irrational or distorted thinking can contribute to anxiety and depression
-
Looks at how we can change dysfunctional thoughts and, in turn, change how we feel.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
-
Research supports using this approach to help with emotional dysregulation/ under-control, chronic suicidal ideation, and self-harming behaviors, among other problems.
-
Teaches skills of mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance to improve coping and emotional regulation
